OCR PDF accuracy: the factors that matter

OCR quality is determined by the input image as much as the recognition engine. Improving the source page often helps more than changing the output format.

Image quality

Clear, sufficiently large text with good contrast gives OCR more information. Tiny or heavily compressed characters leave less useful detail for recognition.

Skew and orientation

Straight pages are easier to analyze than rotated or skewed scans. Fix orientation before OCR when the page is obviously sideways.

Columns and tables

Multiple columns and grid-heavy layouts can confuse reading order. Review the sequence of recognized paragraphs and verify table data separately.

Numbers and names

OCR can misread zeros, ones, letter I, punctuation and similar glyphs. Names, identifiers and financial figures should be checked against the source page.
